Planning a Sarasota or Tampa Wedding: The Paperwork

The ceremony is the part everyone remembers. The license is the part that makes it official — and Florida has a handful of specific rules worth knowing early, because two of them carry clocks that start ticking before the wedding day.

Getting the license

Both partners apply together at any Florida county clerk's office — Sarasota, Manatee, Hillsborough, or anywhere else in the state — and the license is valid statewide. A license issued in downtown Sarasota works perfectly for a ceremony on Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa, and a Hillsborough County license works on Siesta Key. You are not tied to the county where you apply.

Bring valid photo identification and know your social security numbers. If either of you was previously married, know the exact date that marriage ended.

The two clocks

First clock: Florida residents face a three-day waiting period between getting the license and holding the ceremony — unless both partners complete a state-approved premarital preparation course, which waives the wait and discounts the license fee. Non-residents have no waiting period at all.

Second clock: every license expires sixty days after issue. Apply too early and the license lapses before the wedding; apply too late as a resident without the course and the waiting period pushes past your date. The sweet spot for most couples is two to four weeks out.

Ceremony day, legally speaking

On the day itself, the officiant confirms the license details, leads the ceremony you chose, and afterward completes the license and returns it to the issuing clerk within ten days — that return is what makes the marriage a matter of record. Florida does not require witnesses to sign, though many couples include two anyway for the keepsake value.

Venue permits on the coast

Beach ceremonies on Lido, Siesta, and Anna Maria need permits from the managing municipality, and sunset slots during season book out months in advance. Tampa's parks and riverfront spaces have their own reservation systems. Put the permit and the license on the same to-do list — they are equally unskippable, and they catch couples at opposite ends of planning.
